Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. Baptist Health South Florida also has an interest in opening a hospital in Broward.

Calling it a “historic move,” Broward County’s two public health systems plan to develop creative ways to work together — instead of compete — to serve millions of patients.

The boards of the South and North Broward hospital districts met jointly Monday evening for the first time in their history. They voted independently to direct their CEOs to set up task forces that will pitch ideas for partnerships.

The two systems have already begun conversations about partnering for a new hospital in Sunrise, and Broward Health has hired Memorial Healthcare System to consult on information technology and electronic health records. Baptist Health South Florida, which operates 11 hospitals in Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, also has an interest in opening a hospital in Broward County.
