Health Educator – BALSAM Community Health Program

Purpose of the position

BALM or Barnamij L-Ta’leem Sehat al-Mujtama (برنامج لتعليم صحة المجتمع بَلسمْ) is a community-based, household-focused, longitudinal service-learning program that integrates attention to the social determinants of health (DSS) through its educational, service, and research missions. BALSAM integrates social science, clinical experience, interprofessional teamwork, systemic practice, and attention to SDH to produce socially responsible and culturally sensitive physicians. BALSAM accomplishes this mission by partnering with a network of community organizations to improve the health of households and communities. This experience promotes the professional development of students and their acquisition of the skills that form the CMHS MD program.

Reporting to the Community Health Program Manager, the Health Educator plays a key role in advancing the health and SDH education of the program and has three main areas of responsibility:

Key roles and responsibilities

Operational responsibilities

Administrative

  • Support the continuity of the relationship with BALSAM partners
  • Coordinate and plan activities related to health and education SDH
  • Identify essential resources for the program
  • Facilitate courses/activities/workshops/webinars according to the guidelines of the organization
  • Document participant and patient information
  • Collect the data necessary for the monitoring and evaluation of the program and interventions

Academic service

  • Foster service within the community as a whole
  • Design and implement training or capacity building for other health team members and community participants

Health Service

  • Participate in the development and delivery of educational services provided by the BALSAM program.
  • Advocate for community health programs based on community needs

Education: the training will be delivered to three groups: medical students, BALSAM partners and patients/participants. Thus, the health educator

  • Enrich the program and contribute to the development of BALSAM’s health and SDH education curriculum
  • Align Health Education Outcomes with Medicine and Society Course Outcomes
  • Participate in the conceptualization, development and delivery of educational content and training materials necessary to prepare medical students for their roles and responsibilities in the program
  • Participate in the conceptualization, development and delivery of educational content and training materials to build the capacity of BALSAM partners on health and SHD education topics
  • Design and implement programs specifically designed to meet the needs of the community in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Develop materials (print/digital, webinars, workshops) for and support the cascade training of BALSAM trainees, whether students, partners or patients/participants
  • Effectively deliver health and wellness education to target audiences using innovative techniques
  • Assist in the selection of learning resources for program participants
  • Develop materials to support the online version of the course on Black Board

To research

  • Advancing BALSAM’s health and SDH research agenda
  • Participate in the design, planning, implementation and publication of program research
  • Participate in research related to program evaluation and quality improvement

Others

  • Adhere to University information security and privacy policies and procedures and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
  • Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of duties and responsibilities as required
  • Perform any other task assigned by the supervisor

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching, guidance and mentorship as needed to enhance the capacity of students, partners and participants and ensure the achievement of BALSAM results
  • Oversee the planning and delivery of educational materials by students
  • Support the cascade training of trainees whether they are students, partners or patients/participants of BALSAM

Qualifications required

  • Graduate degree in Health Education (Masters or PhD) or Health Care Education and Training with relevant experience required

Experience required

  • Five (5) or more years of healthcare experience with experience developing and delivering training
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team, with well-developed professional and interpersonal skills.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in the healthcare field with experience developing and delivering training
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team, with well-developed professional and interpersonal skills.
