Marion Public Health plans MMR clinic due to measles outbreak

Walk-in MMR vaccination clinic scheduled for Tuesday

Due to the recent measles outbreak reported in Columbus and Franklin County, Marion Public Health is focusing on measles prevention and education efforts in our community. All cases were unvaccinated and had no international travel history.

Measles is a very serious and contagious disease caused by a virus that spreads easily through the air through coughing and sneezing and can lead to hospitalization. People can spread measles before they show symptoms.

The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and highly effective. Marion Public Health will offer a walk-in MMR clinic from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the health department located at 181 S. Main St. The CDC recommends that children receive one dose at each of the following ages: 12 of 15 months and from 4 years to 6 years. Please bring insurance or a medical card, but no eligible child will be turned away for lack of insurance.

It is important for parents, schools and daycare centers to know the signs and symptoms of measles and what to do if a child has these symptoms: fever, runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis (red and watery eyes), small spots whiteness inside the mouth, rash all over the body.

Marion Public Health encourages parents and guardians to contact their healthcare provider if their child has symptoms of measles. To prevent potential spread, please keep children out of school or daycare and away from children under 6 who cannot be vaccinated until the provider diagnoses the child.
