Choose a healthy life (CHL) is a sustainable, scalable, and transferable approach to addressing public health disparities and inequities in the Black community by building a Black church health workforce. CHL started with 50 churches in 5 cities and expanded last year to 120 churches in 13 states and the District of Columbia. As a founding sponsor, the Quest Diagnostics Foundation provided financial support to establish the CHL Church Community Health Workforce.

Community health workers at Choose Healthy Life play a pivotal role in empowering the Black community to take control of their health. These church-based health care navigators work with underserved black communities to address health inequities by connecting to care and addressing key social determinants of health that for many are barriers to services.

Quest Diagnostics recently donated 60 laptops to support improving this program by increasing access to enable health navigators to connect underserved Black communities to critical resources.

“We are very pleased to have the technology in the hands of our navigators that will allow them to communicate and provide services in a timely manner,” said Reverend David Jefferson, Sr., pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. . “This is the first time technology has been brought into the black church to facilitate health and wellness and equip parishioners to be stewards of their personal health and wellness goals.”

“As a health navigator supervisor, I was thrilled to see Quest provide computers to navigators,” said Reverend Kimberly Williams, health navigator supervisor for CHL, Metropolitan Baptist Church. “This investment has helped them equip themselves with the essential tools to work effectively and efficiently. The technology divide has had a major impact on our communities and this resource has removed that barrier and allowed them to focus on the work and the community they serve. Thanks, Quest.

Quest Diagnostics and the Quest Foundation, through their Quest for health equity initiative, builds on their initial commitment to the CHL through their support of the CHL’s Community Wellness Program by offering Blueprint for Wellness®. This comprehensive health screening provides a clinical set of laboratory tests and measurements that are complemented to highlight personal health strengths and risks that will help underserved communities take control of their health.

For nearly 2 years, many have missed routine health exams and therefore chronic diseases and new diagnoses were not addressed. The Community Wellness Program is the next step in the evolution of Choose Healthy Life, which aims to help the Black community develop wellness through access to the healthcare system, preventative screenings and necessary treatments. .

“We know the importance of closing the digital literacy gap and creating access for underserved communities,” said Michael Floyd, Senior Director, Quest for Health Equity, Quest Diagnostics. “These laptops will help healthcare navigators expand the LCH community wellness program and serve as a powerful tool to address the issue of delayed care by helping connect people to Blueprint for Wellness® health screenings. “

Quest’s extensive network of local Patient Service Centers allows individuals to have samples taken and biometric measurements taken at a convenient location near where they live, work and worship.
